Margiana. A Bronze Age Kingdom in Turkmenistan

A special exhibition by the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan and in partnership with the Archäologisches Museum Hamburg and the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim Margiana – a historical landscape in eastern Turkmenistan that 4000 years ago was the cradle of a fascinating, advanced Bronze Age civilization.

Featured at the heart of this exhibition are the results of archaeological investigations undertaken in the ancient city of Gonur Tepe.

The building structures discovered at this site bear witness to early instances of urban planning. The palace complex and burial sites known as the ‘Tombs of the Kings’ have thrown up many relationships to the regions that would subsequently form the Silk Road. More than 220 objects from Gonur Tepe will be shown for the first time outside Turkmenistan.
