The Poetry Brothel: It's Happening Again in Berlin

The Poetry Brothel is an immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside of books, classrooms and lecture halls and makes it experiential by placing it in the tantalizing interiors of a whorehouse. It is conceptually based on the finde-siècle bordellos in New Orleans and Paris, many of which functioned as safe havens for fledgling avant-garde artists.

The Poetry Brothel's "Madame" presents a rotating cast of poets as "whores," each operating within a carefully constructed character, who impart their work in public recitals, spontaneous eruptions of poetry, and most distinctly, as purveyors of private, one-on-one readings in séparées. For a small fee, the "poetry whores" are available for these sequestered intimate performances throughout the event.

The Poetry Brothel is a cabaret that tickles all the senses, offering a highly-detailed, immersive environment, a full bar, live music, burlesque dancers and other on-stage acts, painters and fortune tellers, all responding to each event's unique theme.

The reading series-cum-literary theater is the brainchild of Stephanie Berger (The Madame) and Nicholas Adamski (“Tennessee Pink”) who both will be give acte de présence in Berlin and who will be available for interviews.

The second edition of the Poetry Brothel Berlin will take place on September 29th 2017 at Insomnia Club, AltTempelhof 17-19, 12099 Berlin. A live band, several Lynchian cabaret acts and the finest international poets and performers (featuring guest artists from Poetry Brothels in Paris, Brussels, London, Dublin and New York) will make this one a night to remember.

The event will be in English, though poets may offer readings in other languages. We encourage our guests to embrace this edition's particularly bizarre – erotic dress code a la Blue Velvet, Lost Highway or Fire Walk With Me.
