Berlin’s Summer: Following The Ice cream Trail

As the grey-upon-grey winter finally starts to break, Berliners hit the streets hunting for those tiny rays of sunshine as they crack between the clouds. Basking in the few moments of bliss, away go the winter layers in favour of trench coats and the streets once again liven up with bikes, pedestrians and screaming children. This is when the ice cream stores wave a sigh of relief, wipe off the cobwebs and pull down their newspaper-covered windows in favour of umbrellas and patio furniture ahead of a fruitful season.

Germans, love Eis anytime of year and now as spring has finally sprung, locals turn to April as a sign to begin huddling in front of every Eis store in town to get a taste of the newest vegan, non-fat, lactose free, yoghurt concoction of 2016. With lines growing and pending warmer summer nights ahead, here are the best places to get a sample of the more nuanced flavours of the season.


Known around the city with locations in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Mitte and Neukölln, lines circle the block of each little blue outpost of Eis Manufaktur. Most popular thanks to their true to the real thing flavours where orange tastes like oranges, strawberry of strawberries and green tea of green tea!

The light, natural and creative flavours on rotation guarantee melting tastebuds whether you want a classic chocolate or something fancy and new.

Stepping out of this world with experimentation, Die Eismacher in Keuzberg sets apart the boys from the men when it comes to ice cream. Including flavours such as Ube and Pandan – Thai flavours made from sweet potato tasting of nutty-coconut goodness – is bright purple and green respectively with decadent textures and flavours.

More traditional all natural mango and vanilla are also to die for and the café has a decent coffee setup too. With a perfectly gunmetal grey and white interior, Die Eismacher is far more than your regular ice cream shop experience.

From the experimental to the traditional, La Piccola in Prenzlauer Berg is your quintessential, ma-and-pa corner store making traditional Italian style gelato and creamy ice creams. The surprise however; is the sizeable vegan and lactose free varieties that do not compromise on flavour one bit.

The dunkle schokolade is heavy, rich, creamy and icy all at once and the lemon is both tart and creamy. Notable recommendations to the salted caramel and yoghurt too as well as friendly, happy staff.

With flavours including the extremely summery watermelon, mango, and coconut as well as desert inspired cashew nut, white chocolate and cheesecake options, the all natural, super hipster hangout provides a refreshing take on the humble ice cream with a very LA feel.
