Recognize, Repair, Regrow - Personalized Biomedicine Rises

Join forces in Berlin at the 8th Berlin- Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies Symposium: ''Recognize, Repair, Regrow - Personalized Biomedicine Rises''

Our earliest vivid imagination of superpowers arose from what our childhood superheroes could potentially triumph over in the cartoons that we watched or the stories that we read. Fearless and adventurous, we confidently believed in their ability to conquer everything ranging from the nearly to the highly impossible. Whether it was fighting some evil adversary, time-traveling, or moving mountains, our ideal superhero nailed it all with ease.

Extrapolating the sense of adventure of the mind and curiosity to the real world, man today seeks a voyage with the indomitable spirit of unraveling what has been beyond the dimensions of the spectrum of human imagination. As Edwin Hubble, the great American astronomer rightly says, “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science“. One such venture that has received increasing attention in recent years is unleashing the power of regenerative medicine, which Nature Magazine, one of the leading scientific journals, defines as “the branch of medicine that develops methods to regrow, repair or replace damaged or diseased cells, organs or tissues. Regenerative medicine includes the generation and use of therapeutic stem cells, tissue engineering and the production of artificial organs.

Since scientists in the biomedical research field aspire to improve diagnostic or therapeutic options or simply to gain insight into the cause and development of diseases, they seek to be “little heroes“ with the hope that their daily work eventually finds clinical application. To provide the next generation scientists (or superheroes to be!) with a ideal platform to present their findings, the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies (www.bsrt.de) at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of the leading graduate schools in the field of regenerative medicine, is gearing up to host the 8th BSRT symposium with a superhero theme intended  to unite scientists at the heart of Berlin under the motto:

“Recognize, Repair, Regrow- Personalized biomedicine rises” from November 29th to December 1st in Berlin, Germany.

The BSRT symposium, an annual event for the last seven years, targets scientific researchers from biomedicine and related fields from all over the world. The aim of this event is to examine the topic of personalized medicine on a multiscale level (genome-, cell-, organ-, organism-) with respect to the contributing drivers: innovation, diagnosis and therapeutic opportunities. Furthermore, as Rajiv Kumar Khajuria, symposium co-organizer and PhD student at the BSRT and with FU Berlin & Harvard Medical School describes, “Some of the major impediments for junior researchers in leading conferences are the comprehensive schedules and the difficulty of approaching senior scientists. Our student-centric event, organized by students themselves, would offer early career scientists (Master's & PhD students, as well as early post-docs), the opportunity to present and discuss their current research and ideas in a rather friendly and relaxed atmosphere”.

In addition, the event will include unique networking and social events and the chance to interact with representatives from some of the leading biotech-companies sponsoring the event, including BioLegend, , Biotrics bioimplants GmbH, Macherey-Nagel GmbH & Co. KG, New England Biolabs GmbH, Oxford Nanopore Technologies Ltd. ,Takara Bio Inc, and Zwick GmbH & Co. KG,. Furthermore attractive prizes will be awarded to the best speaker and poster presenters.

So, whether or not you consider scientists as superheroes, it is your prerogative. But if you are the one who hopes to contribute to find solutions to some of the most pressing medical problems facing the society today, the 8th BSRT symposium is the place to be. Get ready to join forces in Berlin if you want to discover more about personalized medicine, present your research, network with the experts, win awards and last, but not the least, if you wish to visit the dynamic German capital of Berlin!
